Moncton Vegan Guide

 Moncton Vegan Guide

Since Moncton is essentially my second home and the place I was born, I thought I would be the perfect person to create it's very own vegan guide. My Halifax guide has been so successful and helpful to tons of people, while Moncton is not quite as vegan-friendly as my home in Nova Scotia, it is definitely growing and expanding every day and I see a demand to offer a one stop guide for those from and travelling to Moncton. On top of that, it has some of the most amazing vegan food I've ever had!

So here it is,
with love,
The Vegan Peach.
xox :)

Vegetarian Restaurants:

Calactus: Located on Church Street. Another one of my personal all-time favourite restaurants. What can I say, Moncton offers amazing vegan food! Calactus is completely vegetarian but they do offer dairy cheese, however, anything can be made vegan and they make their own tofu cream as a cheese substitute and it's pretty much the best thing ever! My personal favourites are their nachos and their Big Marq burger.

Coffee Shops:

He corrected it no problem but I had already taken a sip. :(

Local Vegan Eats-- Wild Leek

The Wild Leek is by far one of my favourite spots in Halifax. It has a rustic artsy feel with delicious food that feels like something your mom would make. A vegan twist on traditional favourites, along with unique one-of-a-kind creations.

You really feel at home at the Leek.

The menu is not massive but it's still enough that I always have a hard time choosing. Portion size is perfect and prices are extremely reasonable. I always leave satisfied from the Wild Leek. Fare includes bowls, a donair, wraps and an all-day breakfast menu.

I feel a lot of love from the food there.

Ultimate burger and potato soup

Wild Bowl
Chocolate hazelnut cupcake

The Wild Leek offers all day breakfast and to quote Tori Amos "breakfast every hour, it could save the world." I think this is a very smart move on the Leek's part because I am pretty partial to breakfast. They offer a vegan omlette, known as the "nomlette", which is pretty special, as well as housemade seitan bacon, pancakes and homemade cornbread. True comfort food.

They have a great selection of baked goods. I am pretty fond of the cupcakes, I can't leave there without getting one, which change daily. They are truly the best cupcakes in the world. They will also do desserts upon request. So if you are looking for a birthday cake or something delicious for a special occasion, the Leek has got you covered. Brownies, muffins, cookies and more are also always in house.

They have a smoothie and juice bar which are always fresh and made right before your eyes. The Chocolite has got to be my favourite smoothie and I am pretty partial to the Elixir when it comes to juice but they are all delicious and nutritious.

Daily specials, as well as, special menus are constantly being created. Holiday dinners, 3 course meal events, pizza nights and so much more.

It just doesn't get any better than this. I love the homey, welcoming atmosphere that is the Wild Leek. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the food is out of this world. If you are visiting Halifax or living here and yet to go, put it on the list of places to eat. And that my friends is the Vegan Peach seal of approval.

Local Vegan Eats-- Heartwood- CLOSED

After visiting a second time to Heartwood, I feel I have enough experience there to give a proper review. First off, entering the restaurant, it's a warm inviting atmosphere. This time I arrived in the evening, you get to see the lovely mood lighting with candles on each table and dimmed overhead lights. The restaurant itself has lovely decor with a really inviting atmosphere. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. The menu is fairly large, all 4 of us took quite awhile to decide because everything sounds so delicious. The menu is quite extensive offering everything from pizza, burgers, to healthier wraps and salads. They also have a quite extensive dessert selection of cheesecake, cookies and bars and the best part is, it's all vegan except when "cheese" is listed on the menu description. They also offer a full organic menu which is quite rare.

I admit, I'm a fussy vegan. I don't like kale, green peppers and a slew of other veggies. So sometimes it can be hard eating out even in vegan-friendly joints because many of the places use a lot of things I don't care for. When scanning the menu at Heartwood, everything sounds extremely appetizing. To the point I actually want to order several meals.  Tonight we opted for nachos as an appetizer and beet burgers for our main course. The nachos were delicious. The dipping sauces were both flavourful and accented the nachos perfectly and I loved that they had mushrooms with them as I love mushrooms.

When the main course came out, my initial reaction was, "this looks good but what a small portion size". The burger is very small and the steamed greens it came with were also extremely small and of course, happened to be kale with 3 small piece of broccoli and some carrots topping it. The burger was delicious and satisfying. I did leave full but I believe that's mainly because we had the nachos first. I honestly think if it wasn't for the appetizer, I would have been very hungry when I left. I got a cookie for dessert and was also extremely disappointed by the size. It was very small especially for the cost.

Overall, I think Heartwood makes tasty food but I can't justify spending the amount of money they want for their dishes. Yes, I understand they are organic but when you are strapped for cash and on a serious budget, it's just not worth it. If you are someone that can spend a little more, Heartwood may be the perfect place for you. It's just a shame they couldn't at least give you a little more for the side dishes. Offer the roasted potatoes for no extra charge with the burgers or pile on a little more salad. We need a little more bang for our buck. Just saying. :)

Canadian Chain Restaurants with Vegan Options

Canadian Chain Restaurants with Vegan Options

Something I get asked quite frequently is "how do you eat on the go as a vegan"? It can seem daunting at first but once you learn, it becomes quite easy. Firstly, if you know you are going somewhere that will have limited options, bring something with you. Energy and protein bars (there is a vast selection of vegan bars on the market now, such as Larabar, Clif bar and Luna Bar), fruit (fresh or dried), trail mix, nuts, vegan yogurts or pudding. The list never ends. My main focus of this blog post however, is going to be vegan options in chain restaurants across Canada. A tip I can give is, Mexican, Middle Eastern and Asian places tend to be fairly vegan-friendly. You still always need to ask questions though as many use things such as lard or fish sauce. Italian joints are also usually fairly vegan-friendly, most pastas are already vegan (unless egg based) and marinara sauce is normally as well. Pizza crusts and sauces tend to be naturally vegan but as always, ask questions! If worse comes to worse, most places at least offer french fries that are cooked in a plant oil or a salad.

Here we go:

A&W: Offers the Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage breakfast sandwich, ask for no mayo or uncle sauce. Personally I still won't eat here until they can guarantee separate grills but I'm including it for all those people who aren't as picky as I. They have added the Beyond nuggets now. Deep-fried in the same fryers as animal products. Locations all across Canada.

BarBurrito: Mexican style fast food chain. Offers veggie ground and bean for tacos, burritos or bowls. Locations across Canada.

Beavertails: Surprisingly enough, you can actually get a Beavertails as a vegan, The following can be made vegan, simply ask for no butter: Cinnamon sugar and Killaloe Sunrise, Apple cinnamon with no caramel drizzle or butter, Maple without butter or chocolate and coco vanil without butter or chocolate. You can also get their smoothies without yogourt.

Booster Juice: Fresh juices and smoothies. They offer plant milk alternatives and their Acai Energy Bowl and the Sweet Greens bowl are vegan as well.

Boston Pizza: BP now offers a marked vegan burger and bowl on the menu. They also carry daiya cheese and Beyond crumbles for pizza, original or thin crust is safe for vegans. Located countrywide.

Burger King: Canada has finally got the Impossible Burger. Like A&W the patty is cooked on the same grill as beef which I personally won't consume. Also make sure to ask for no mayo on the bun. Their fries and onion rings are safe as well. Located countrywide.

Cheese Curds: Offers a vegan burger and veggie poutine. Locations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Cultures: Nutritious fast-food, offering sandwiches, bowls and salads. They have marked vegan options and offer tempeh as a meat-alternative. Location in the Halifax Shopping Centre.

Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria: This pizzeria is rapidly expanding across Canada but is currently in Western Canada mostly and a couple locations in Ontario. They offer delicious authentic Italian pizza and even have Daiya cheese on the menu.

Freshii: Freshii has finally arrived locally for me but they have lots of locations all across Canada. They offer lots of vegan options that are clearly marked including, chili, wraps, bowls, burritos, oatmeal, fresh juices and more. They normally have a list of vegan options if you ask a staff member. Locations all across Canada.

Gojis: Gojis has 3 locations in Atlantic Canada (Moncton, PEI and Antigonish). They have their amazing vegan almond milk frozen yogurt. They offer several vegan-friendly toppings and also dairy free sorbet and just added coconut and cashew milk froyo to the menu as well.

Habaneros: Mexican burrito bar that offers vegan bombay curry, porkless and vegan steak for tacos, burritos and bowls. Locations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Harvest Clean Eats:  Offers a wide selection of vegan options, including bowls, salads, smoothies, soups and more. Locations across the Maritimes.

Harvey's: The veggie burger is vegan and so is the bun! And the great part is you get to choose your own toppings, so you get exactly what you want. Their fries and onion rings are also vegan-friendly and they have veggie gravy as well. Note: I avoid the relish as there's cross contamination. They have a dedicated grill for their veggie burgers as well. Locations all across Canada.

Ikea: Cafeteria style restaurant that offers a veggie balls plate with vegan meatballs, rice and veggies, pasta marinara, salads and unique fountain drinks for a dollar. They also now serve veggie dogs at the canteen. They are vegan, the bun is vegan and are kept separately from the hot dogs. Plus they are even cheaper than the meat ones! Thank you Ikea! Also now have strawberry frozen soft serve.Very affordable and delicious! In the grocery section you can also purchase the veggie balls, vegan gummies, vegan caviar, fruit drinks and more. Location in Dartmouth Crossing.

Irving Big Stop: Offers the Beyond Burger. Locations across the Maritimes.

Jack Astor's:  Their fajitas can be done vegan by leaving out the cheese and sour cream, add mushrooms or tofu. They also have some other bowls and salads that I think may be customizable. They offer tofu as a meat alternative and have orange sorbet for dessert. Locations Canada wide.

Jugo Juice: Who doesn't love a good smoothie or juice? They even offer almond and coconut milk and have Vega protein powder that can replace the whey protein. Vegan protein bars are also available at the counter. Location in MicMac Mall.

Jungle Jim's:  Maritime chain restaurant that offers a Viva Las Vegan bowl.

KFC:  Offers the plant-based Lightlife chicken burger. It is cooked in the same oil as chicken products so although I won't touch it, I know others aren't as strict as I. Locations Canada-wide

The Keg: Offers a few vegetarian options on their menu, not totally sure of vegan status. Vegetarian meatloaf and Mediterranean cauliflower sound vegan. Locations in Dartmouth and Halifax.

Meltwich: has a vegan menu which includes sandwiches, a burger, poutine and chikn strips. Has locations across Canada, with 3 in Nova Scotia.

Menchie's: Menchie's has locations worldwide and offers dairy-free vegan sorbet that is delicious! No locations in the Maritimes anymore but other areas of Canada still have them.

Mezza Lebanese Kitchen: Offers amazing falafels that you can have on a plate with other Lebanese cuisine, as a wrap, bowls or burger. Locations across Nova Scotia and expanding into other parts of the Maritimes.

Moxie's: Has a plant based menu with selections such as the Beyond burger, vegan tofu lettuce wraps and vegan tacos. Locations across Canada.

New York Fries: So it may just be fries but it is vegan. They use sunflower oil, no animal fat and hey they are a naughty greasy treat. :) Locations across Canada including the HRM.

Panago Pizza: Chain franchise across Canada that is now offering Daiya cheese, Impossible nuggets and vegan cheesy bread. They also are offering Beyond Meat crumbles and meatless pepperoni. Remember to ask for gluten-free dough as well because apparently the regular ones have l-cysteine. Locations in different areas of Canada.

Papa John's: The sauce and original hand-tossed dough are vegan, ask for no cheese and add veggies and you have a vegan pizza. The garlic dipping and BBQ sauce are vegan as well.

P.F. Chang's: If you are in Winnipeg or Montreal you are in luck. P.F. Chang's has many locations across the US but only 2 within Canada at this time. They have a vegetarian menu that is also vegan-friendly.

Piatto Pizzeria: They have locations throughout the Maritimes and has a vegan pizza on the menu with vegan cheese.

Pita Pit:  They offer vegan-friendly pitas and smoothies. You can navigate their website to tell you what is vegan with their dietary restrictions setting. They also have nutritional charts readily available in store and mark items that are vegan with a V+. Some options are spicy black bean and falafels. Locations across Canada.

Pizza Delight: This is more of an eastern franchise but Pizza Delight has always been one of my favourites since I was a little kid, so I'm happy that their dough and amazing sauce is vegan-friendly. You can do either a pizza or calzone but make sure to ask for no cheese. With the panzorotti you also need to ask them to not put garlic butter over the top and to switch the meat sauce it comes with to marinara. Locations throughout the Maritimes.

Pizza Pizza: Finally a Canadian pizza chain that offers vegan cheese by Violife! and Yves pepperoni. They have Lightlife chicken burgers and nuggets on the menu and vegan Ben & Jerry's as well. They also have a great selection of interesting toppings. It's super inexpensive as well and very quick, 15 minutes or it's free! Locations across Canada including in the HRM.

Pur & Simple: They offer a couple vegan options on the menu including one specifically called "The Vegan" and 80% of their smoothies. They have the Impossible burger on their lunch menu. Locations across Canada.

Quizno's: The wheat baguette with BBQ, guacamole, four pepper chili, marinara or mustard and lots of veggies. Locations across Canada.

Second Cup: They have over 300 locations across Canada and offer soy and almond milk for drinks. They also now have vegan-friendly smoothies as well and a couple packaged snacks by Sweets From the Earth. Locations Across Canada.

Smitty's: Locations across Canada, they offer a plant based black bean burger in place of a beef patty.

Starbucks: Almost all of Starbucks drinks can be made vegan when made with soy, coconut or almond milk (refer to the link to double check which aren't). The plain and multigrain bagels are suitable. They usually have little packaged snacks that are suitable as well, such as Justin's dark peanut butter cups. Locations across Canada.

Subway: Simply get a veggie delite from Subway, omit cheese and mayo. Load up on veggies. Their Italian, roasted garlic and wraps are all vegan-friendly. Sweet Onion sauce is vegan or simply go with mustard or bbq sauce if your location offers it. Also some locations across Canada offer a vegan veggie patty. It's totally delicious and is indeed vegan unlike the American counter part. Locations across Canada.

Taco Bell: Burritos can easily be made vegan, ask for no cheese, hold the sour cream and you are good to go. You can get them to add rice or potatoes, lettuce, onion and tomato to them for an extra kick. And don't forget the sauce. Locations across Canada.

Thai Express:  With several locations across Canada they offer fast Thai food. They have several vegetarian options that also happen to be vegan (some come with egg normally but it can easily be left out). Their spring rolls are also vegan.

The Chopped Leaf: Healthy fast food with customizable bowls, wraps, sandwiches, salads and more. Offers falafel and tofu for protein. Locations across Canada, including Dartmouth.

Tim Hortons: Tim's is FINALLY offering almond milk nationwide. Their coffee and teas are mostly vegan, ice capps can even be veganized now with almond milk. Many of the bagels at Tim's are vegan except those containing cheese or honey. The l-cysteine is artificial and therefore vegan-friendly.  Their oatcakes and so is their oatmeal, hash browns and flatbreads.

Wendy's: They offer a plain baked potato, the Deluxe Garden Salad with red Italian dressing and no cheese, and French fries.

Wok box: Wok Box offers quite a few vegan options and even label many now that can be made vegan. If you love noodles and rice, you'll love Wok Box. They have also started to offer vegan chicken from YamChops! Check their website for all the details. There are many locations across Canada. Locations across Canada including Dartmouth Crossing.

Yogen Fruz: If you are looking for something sweet, Yogen Fruz offers a large selection of non-dairy sorbets and smoothies. They have locations all across Canada, as well as many other parts of the world. Looks like they are located in Pita Pit locations from what I can find.

Please note: Asking every place you go into about policies regarding separate fryer's or other cross contamination is a good idea. Many restaurants differ by area.

A Vegan Guide to Halifax

 ⛴A Vegan Guide to Halifax⛵

I thought I'd make this guide for anyone who is moving or traveling here, just turning vegan here or even currently living here, and not knowing what it has to offer. Since I have a lot of time to kill, I tend to obsessively look up the vegan community: restaurants, health food stores, grocery stores and more. I like to see the transitioning of our community, see the broadening horizons for vegans and how much the world really is embracing compassion. I am going to break things down into categories and hope this is helpful to someone.

Let's start with the basics:

  • Halifax does have a Vegetarian Association which is membership based. They usually do monthly meetups at different restaurants.
  • If you are looking for a place to do some animal activism, check out Vegan Education Group.
  • All of the local Sobey's and Superstores I have been to have a half-decent size natural foods department. They have a good selection of vegan-friendly snacks, cruelty free beauty products and cleaning supplies and other specialty and organic type items. You can get by easily shopping strictly at those stores.  Superstore now has their own line of vegan/plant-based items which you will find all over the store under their President's Choice branding.
  • Wal-mart carries a selection with Yves veggie meat, Field Roast, tofu and even has a small or larger gluten-free/natural section that offers some vegan-friendly snacks. Some locations also have Gardein, Beyond and other plant based meats in the freezer section. Ben & Jerry's, Haagen Dazs and Breyers vegan variety of their ice cream is also showing up at Walmart's. They've also started to add Daiya and other vegan cheeses, Yogurts and of course dairy-free milks.
  • Costco offers a decent selection of vegan foods, it tends to be hit and miss but worth checking if you have a membership. I've seen tofu, veggie burgers, springrolls, potstickers, great prices on hummus and veggies, their Kirkland shampoo and conditioner is cruelty-free and vegan, breads and oatcakes, peanut butter balls, chips, and bulk shelf stable foods and snacks like Clif Bars.
Vegan Restaurants:
  • Springhouse: On Gottingen Street right next to Real Fake Meats.  Previously called Fruition, an all vegan and healthy restaurant and they've added a vegan market with lots of local items and staples for your vegan pantry. Everything from chocolate to crackers. They also hold pop-ups of other local vegan companies. Best raw food I have ever eaten. I recommend the Gardenburger, macaroons and cheesecake.

  • Wild Leek: They make fresh juices and smoothies and have daily specials of delicious vegan cuisine. Also has a full menu and a selection of desserts next to the cash. I recommend the dragon fries and cupcakes!

  • enVie A Vegan Kitchen: Offers daily specials, raw and gluten free options, as well as a full menu. Also has a full menu of vegan beer and wine.
  • Real Fake Meats: Chef Lauren Marshall  is the creator of the first vegan butcher shop with artisan plant-based cheese and meat products.Restaurant recently renovated and has full seating.

Delivery/Food Truck:
  • Vegan Ghost Noodle:  Vegan delivery service offering noodle bowls.
  • IrieVeg: Vegan food truck normally on Hammond's Plains Road.

 Vegetarian Restaurants:
  • Heartwood by the Sea: At the Salt Yard Social. Heartwood's only location is now down on the Halifax waterfront. So far it is all vegan as they offer their Heartwood bowls, cookies and drinks. Such a wonderful addition to a very unfriendly place for vegans.
  • Sprout Therapy: Located on Portland Street Dartmouth, serving juice and smoothies, also offers almond milk. Also have some grab and go healthy bowls and salads.
  • Lemon Dogs: Located at the Lockside Canteen in Shubie Park, Dartmouth. Offers vegetarian and vegan burgers and drinks.

Meat Markets (yes, that's right):
  • M&M Food Market: It's not the typical place you'd assume you'd fine vegan items but M&M has been offering vegan burgers for many years, they've changed since I last had them but they are now clearly marked vegan and were delicious then and delicious now. They also carry 2 clearly marked boxed desserts. As well, they have frozen veggies, bread, onion rings and fries available.
  • Gateway Meat Market:  Located in Dartmouth. Even though it is called a meat market, they have a quite extensive variety of produce that goes on for amazing prices. They now also carry the Beyond Burger, sausages and crumbles! They also bring in vegan specials most weeks.
  • Cavicchi's: Located in Tantallon, this meat shop is now carrying the Beyond burgers and sausage! And also have a vegan chickpea patty.
 Vegan Other:
  • Eco Chic: is a full vegan, eco-friendly salon located in Bedford. All products are also organic.

    Vegan Brands Locally:

  • Cosmic Tree Essentials: is a local vegan cosmetic company that you can purchase at Pete's and Springhouse.
 Market Stalls:
  • The Mediocre Bakery:  Previously called "Two Dumb Vegans". Sells inside the Historic Brewery Market on Saturday's, offers vegan cinnamon rolls and other baked goods.
  • Acadiana Soy Products: Local tofu producers from Grand Pre. They are sold in places like Pete's, Organic Earth and the Historic Farmer's Market.
  • Syd Delicious: Pickup and delivery, made to order all vegan cinnamon buns, cupcakes, brownies and more. You can also find her goodies at Cafe Marco Polo in Dartmouth and other local businesses. Also look for at pop-up events.

  • Bliss Bowls: Market vendor at the Seaport on Saturdays making decadent vegan smoothie bowls. Currently selling at Hold Fast Cafe in Halifax.
  • North Node Bakery:  Fully vegan market vendor at Alderney Landing and also doing pop-ups at other markets. Makes unique fun flavours of cookies, cakes, pies, muffins and more!

  • Bramble: Plant based baked goods such as doughtnuts, buns and more. Find them at the Spryfield market on Sundays.
Specialty Grocery/Health Food Stores:
  • Halifax has quite a few local specialty health food stores. Pete's Fine Foods is a local grocery store with locations in Bedford (attached to Sunnyside Mall) and downtown Halifax. Wondering what you can eat outside of the city? Click here. Also check my Shopping Cruelty-free in Canada guide. The HRM has all of the stores mentioned in that post. And also check out my Chain Restaurant blog post.
